Top Travel Tips for EcuadorFive Things to Consider when Planning a Trip to Ecuador, S. AmericaIn order to assure a smooth stay, tourists to Ecuador should know a few simple things about the weather, tipping and shopping before they arrive.
Knowing things like who to tip and when, what the rates of sales tax are and when to expect to be charged sales tax, and how to pack for the variations in weather will make a trip to Ecuador a more pleasant experience. Currency and Money ExchangeIn 2000, Ecuador adopted the U.S. dollar as its official currency. Money can be exchanged at the airport or in casas de cambio, although there are fewer of the latter since the currency change. While in theory the banks can exchange foreign currency, in practice it may be difficult to exchange currencies other than euros or Colombian pesos. It may be best to make the exchange to U.S. dollars before arriving. Packing for the WeatherBecause of the range in altitudes resulting from the high Andes mountain chain which cuts through the country, Ecuador is a country of many climates. From the stifling heat of the Amazon rain forest region to the chilly winds of the Andean páramos, visitors to Ecuador should bring a wide range of clothing to ensure that they are properly dressed throughout their stay. For travel within the mountain region, it is advisable to wear layers, such as a spring jacket or sweater with a short-sleeved shirt underneath. Summer clothing which allows room to breathe is recommended on the coast, as the temperatures at midday can often reach the high 80’s or low 90’s. Light clothing that covers much of your skin is best for the rain forest region, in order to prevent bug bites. Protecting oneself from the sun is also important in Ecuador. Since the country is directly on the equator, and due to high altitudes in many parts, the sun's rays are very intense. Wearing plenty of sunscreen and a cap or straw hat is a good way to prevent sun stroke and sunburn. TippingTipping is not as common in Ecuador as in other countries. Taxi drivers, for instance, are generally not tipped, nor hairdressers or bartenders. In fact, tipping in these situations could be a bit awkward for the parties involved. Food servers are also not given tips customarily, since a flat service rate of 10% is often charged at restaurants. Nevertheless, if this service fee is not charged, or if the service was exceptionally good, leaving a tip would be appropriate and well appreciated. If renting a car, it is important to know that the people on the street who protect the car from theft and vandals are generally given a small tip from $0.25 USD to $1 USD. ShoppingIt is difficult to find change for large bills in the country, and many places simply will not take anything over a $20 USD bill. Carrying small bills of $20 USD or less will make it much easier to purchase items. Exact change is often requested, if not expected, especially at the fresh markets, when buying from street vendors, when riding taxis or buses, or at small business establishments. Therefore, while in Ecuador, it is always a good idea to carry spare change. Cash is still the preferred monetary form within Ecuador, although some places may accept credit cards. The most widely accepted cards are Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa. ATMs can be found in many of the cities around the country. Sales TaxMany articles, including clothing, some medicines, and many processed foods, are charged a 12% sales tax. In addition to this tax, many restaurants also charge an automatic 10% gratuity.
